Garage door replacement checklist: from product selection to handover

Capture the exact door, compatible hardware, included work and final documents before a replacement project is considered complete.

Safety first. Door replacement involves heavy components and high-tension hardware. Use a trained door systems technician; this checklist is for purchasing and handover, not DIY installation.

Turn the design choice into a product record

A replacement order should identify the door you selected clearly enough that you can check what arrives. Save the manufacturer, product line, model, quoted size, panel pattern, finish, window layout and selected glazing. Keep the dated proposal and any physical sample reference together. A photograph of a similar door is useful inspiration, but it is not a complete specification.

Ask the installer to confirm the opening and available clearances. Clopay identifies headroom, side space and room behind the opening as installation considerations. Do not assume the dimensions of an old door establish every requirement for a different system. The professional should resolve fit before the order is finalized.

Identify what is new and what would remain

Request a simple included-or-retained list for the door sections, tracks, springs, mounting hardware, perimeter seals, opener and controls. DASMA explains that tracks and sections function together; an old track may not suit a new door. Ask the installer to document compatibility rather than treating reuse as an automatic saving.

If the opener will stay, ask how compatibility and required door reinforcement will be established. If it will change, identify its model and the included remotes, wall control and accessories. Clopay's FAQs show why a door package and every installation accessory should not be assumed to mean the same thing.

Resolve the specification gaps before ordering

Use a deliberate handover

Reserve time for the installer to demonstrate the completed system and explain the manufacturer-prescribed safety checks. Ask what normal operation should look and sound like, which conditions mean stop using it, and whom to call if something changes. Do not substitute an improvised personal test or spring adjustment for the technician's commissioning process.

Compare the installed model, visible finish and accessories with the order. Point out damage, missing items or unexplained differences while they can be documented. Keep a written outstanding-work list with an agreed next step. A successful demonstration does not by itself resolve an incorrect product or unfinished part of the contracted scope.

Keep the ownership documents

Collect the final itemized invoice, model and serial information where applicable, door and opener manuals, care instructions, warranty documents and service contact. Keep the product warranty separate from any installation workmanship promise. Clopay publishes different warranty documents by model and also describes a separate installation program with eligibility conditions; do not assume either applies to every purchase.

Ask whether registration is required and who will complete it, and retain proof if it is done. Put the maintenance instructions somewhere accessible to future occupants. This checklist covers the product and handover, not permit or association approval; use the separate Mesa project-planning guide to identify those questions for your address and scope.
